Sixteenth seed Veronika Kudermetova and the wildcard Venus Williams will on Monday square off in the first round at the 2023 Cincinnati Masters. Venus Williams hasn’t taken to the court that much in 2023 and has played only seven matches. In what is her 30th year on the tour and probably her last, Williams has managed only two victories. One of those has come on hard court in her first match of the season in Auckland. She will hope playing on home soil with the backing of the crowd will see her prolong her stay past this round. The veteran American is a former semifinalist in Cincinnati, achieving the feat in 2012. She arrives for her 11th appearance here after being defeated in the first round at the Canadian Open. Her third defeat on the trot left her down in 533rd place in the live ranking.

Veronika Kudermetova arrives in Ohio ranked 16th in the live ranking. The Russian is having a decent campaign and has won 25 of the 39 matches she has played. Ten of her victories have come in 17 outings on hard court. This is the most she has won on any surface so far. Kudermetova’s highlight of the season however came on grass where she finished as runner-up at the Rosmalen Open. The 26-year-old has made four appearances in this WTA 1000 tournament and has gone as far as the third round twice. Kudermetova last took to the court more than a month ago as she lost in the second round at Wimbledon. She will hope to have recharged her batteries fully for a potential title challenge here. The winner here will play either unseeded Zheng Qinwen or a yet-to-be-revealed qualifier in the second round.
