Game 5 of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals sees the Vegas Golden Knights looking to close out the Florida Panthers. Vegas can lift the trophy with a win tonight after building up a 3-1 series lead following their 3-2 Game 4 away win. This would be the first Stanley Cup for the Knights who have done exceedingly well to rise to the top of the league after their assembly in 2017. That’s not to say that the Panthers are completely done and dusted. Florida staged an incredible comeback from 3-1 down earlier in these playoffs, winning three straight to upset the heavily-favored Boston Bruins in seven games.
Vegas enters this game having won four of the last five matches and are really clicking at the moment. One of the keys to their success this series has been their excellence on the defensive side of play. The Knights have allowed just nine goals in the four games played in the Stanley Cup Finals, for an average of 2.25 per game. Vegas is simply the superior team and they have played with a high level of consistency throughout this entire postseason run. The team is leading the playoff rankings with 59 goals from their 21 games with the next highest being Florida at 38 goals in 20 matches. They’ve also outscored the Panthers 12-4 in Games 1 and 2 played on their home ice.
The Panthers are facing a formidable challenge to complete yet another 3-1 deficit. They’ve been unable to cope with the Vegas’ attack, conceding 17 goals in their four meetings so far. To further complicate things is the Game 3 injury to winger Matthew Tkachuk, the team’s primary offensive threat. The 25-year-old led the team in goals (40), assists (69) and points (109) this season. While we expect him to suit up for this game, his decreased impact on the proceedings was clearly noticeable in Game 4. Without a fully healthy Tkachuk, we struggle to see a way for the Panthers to generate enough offense to keep up with this Vegas team.
