The second semi-final scheduled in the 2023 FIBA World Cup sees the tournament favorites United States taking on Germany. The winner of this matchup will take on either Serbia or Canada for the gold medal. The United States are well on their way to a record sixth championship at the FIBA World Cup and first since the 2014 edition. They dismantled Italy in the quarter-final by a score of 100-63 for their second biggest victory of the tournament so far. The only hiccup for Steve Kerr’s men at this World Cup was a 110-104 loss suffered against Lithuania in the final game of the group stage second phase. However, as we predicted, it may have ultimately helped the Americans in the long run as it will have given them a needed reality check. Team USA come into this fixture sporting the best offense in the competition with an average of 101.4 points scored per game. 

Germany have impressed at this World Cup, making it to the final four for only the second time in their nation’s history. Their previous best finish was in 2002 where they took home the Bronze medal after defeating Australia in the third-place game. Germany made it past Latvia by the skin of their teeth in the quarter-final in a game which came down to the final shot. Davis Bertans had a chance to win the game for the Latvians at the buzzer but was just long on his shot as the Germans would hold on for an 81-79 win. Germany are the only unbeaten team in this competition and have gotten wins over two top-10 ranked teams in Australia and Slovenia. They’ll face a significant step up in competition here however, and come into this semi-final as overwhelming underdogs.
