United States - South Africa Squad Analysis
Captain Aaron Jones has been the standout performer for the US with the bat in this tournament and currently holds the highest individual score of any batsman so far, which was the unbeaten 94 he posted in the opening match. Saurabh Netravalkar has yet to find his best form with the ball in the competition, though he has maintained economical figures and should share the new-ball responsibilities with Ali Khan.
South Africa’s top order, on the other hand, has largely been disappointing at the T20 World Cup, with the likes of Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram failing to put together an innings of any real substance. Notably, the Proteas do not have a specialist batting all-rounder and will have to rely on Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller to speed up the scoring at the death. Tabraiz Shamsi put in a Man of the Match performance of 4/19 against Nepal, making him a genuine contender for selection in this match.
United States - South Africa Form Analysis
The 2024 T20 World Cup has already tossed up a few big surprises, but none more so than seeing the co-hosts United States emerge from the group stage. Drawn into Group A, they managed five points from their four matches, including two wins, a defeat and a no result. The US made the perfect start to the competition, securing an opening match victory over Canada by seven wickets, chasing down 195 with more than two overs to spare. However, match two saw the side deliver a performance that will go down as one of the biggest upsets in T20 World Cup history against Pakistan. They went into that match as massive underdogs but held their nerve to overcome the Shaheens in a nail-biting Super Over by five runs after matching the Green Shirts’ 159-run target. A loss to India then followed in match three before their final group-stage match against Ireland was washed out without a ball being bowled. The hosts’ major strength in this tournament has been their powerful batting lineup and they will need to find another big performance here against a very good South African bowling order.
Meanwhile, South Africa entered the competition as the favourites to win Group D and they fully lived up to expectations. They were one of only two sides, along with Australia, to have played and won all four of their group-stage games while managing a +0.470 net run rate. The Proteas kicked off their tournament with a commanding victory over Sri Lanka, where they bowled the Lions out for just 77 runs, which was their lowest T20 World Cup total ever. They followed that up with a four-wicket win over bogey side the Netherlands before two much tighter victories over Bangladesh and Nepal in their last two games. As mentioned, the key to South Africa’s success has been their bowling unit, led by Anrich Nortje, who is the second-highest wicket-taker in the competition with nine scalps. The speedster is averaging a wicket every eight balls and has a best of 4/7 at an economy rate of just 4.80. The visitors are the favourites heading into this match.
