Tommy Paul, who is seeded 14th, and unseeded Ugo Humbert will on Wednesday meet at the 2023 Cincinnati Masters. The winner will book a third-round showdown with either top seed Carlos Alcaraz or the qualifier Jordan Thompson. Ugo Humbert defeated compatriot Arthur Fils 2-1 in the first round to win his first main draw match at this Masters 1000 tournament. The Frenchman had been eliminated in the first round in his two appearances here. With the form that he is on, especially on hard court, he will fancy his chances of an extended stay in Ohio. Humbert has compiled a 34-19 record thus far with 12 of his victories coming in 19 outings on hard court. He has played three challenger finals and has two titles though none has come on hard court. His win over Fils has moved him up two places to 31st in the live ranking.

Tommy Paul defeated Humbert in their only encounter and though it was five years ago, he will be confident of doubling his advantage. Paul is having an amazing season which has seen him edge closer to the ATP Top 10. He is currently ranked 13th in the live ranking which is a career high for him. The American has won 36 of 55 matches he has played with more than half of those, 21, coming on hard court. He has dominated on the surface and has lost only eight times. To begin his sixth appearance in Cincinnati, Paul defeated Miomir Kecmanovic in straight sets. He will hope to have a strong run as he did at the Canadian Open where he earned a semifinal finish. Paul’s performances this year have seen him play three finals with one being on hard court. He has however been unfortunate not to win any of them.
