29th seed Matteo Berrettini will play unseeded Ugo Humbert on Tuesday at the 2023 US Open first round. Ugo Humbert starts the week ranked 33rd in the ATP. In his last match, he was eliminated in the second round at the Cincinnati Masters. The Frenchman has been in good form lately, as he has won seven of his last 10 matches. He arrives here to make his sixth successive main draw appearance at Flushing Meadows having registered a 34-20 record. Of his 34 wins, 12 have come on hard court where he has also been defeated eight times. Humbert has won two titles this year but they were both on the Challenger Tour. In three of his last four appearances here he has been defeated in the first round. The one time this didn't happen he would go on to lose to Berrettini in the second round.

Berrettini has defeated Humbert twice in their three matches to date. He has won the last two meetings, both on hard court, with the latest coming last year at the ATP Cup. This should have him confident of winning here. Berrettini has made it at the second week of competition at Flushing Meadows in three of his five main draw appearances. He is a one-time semifinalist here and in the last two seasons has exited in the quarterfinals. The Italian will however have to turn on the style to at least equal his best-ever finish. Berrettini has struggled with his form due to injury and has a 13-11 record. He has lost more matches, nine, on hard court than the eight he has won. Two of those defeats have come in his last two outings. The former world number six has dropped down a massive 29 places in the live rankings after losing 350 ranking points. He starts the week ranked 65th. The winner here will play either Diego Schwartzman or Arthur Rinderknech, both unseeded, in the second round.
