Fourth seed Ugo Humbert starts his Moselle Open campaign on Tuesday with a second-round showdown with unseeded Dominic Thiem. Humbert defeated Thiem the last time they met. This was slightly over a year ago in the final of the Rennes challenger. He will be confident of another victory especially as he has been in superb form this year. Humbert has won 45 matches which is the most he has managed in his last three seasons. On indoor hard courts, he has compiled a 12-6 record and has registered one runner-up finish in the challenger circuit on the surface. Humbert has started the week having moved to 22nd place in the live ranking which is a career-high placing for him.

Dominic Thiem is making his third appearance in Metz and in the first round defeated lucky loser Matteo Martineu. The former Metz finalist won the match in straight sets. Thiem made the final here in his debut back in 2016 but was defeated in this very round in his return last season. The Austrian former world number three, has been in good form lately and will hope to correct his 27-29 losing record. His win over Martineau was his fourth in his last five matches. He is now up two places to 93rd in the live ranking. A quarterfinal tie with either Harold Mayot or Gregoire Barrere will await the winner here.
