Ugo Humbert, 32nd seed, will on Friday seek back-to-back victories against fifth seed Andrey Rublev when they square off in Shanghai. The two will battle in the quarterfinals with the winner next playing either Grigor Dimitrov or Nicolas Jarry. Ugo Humbert defeated Rublev less than two weeks ago in Beijing to record his second win against the Russian. He will now seek to tie this series at 3-3 and his performances in Shanghai will have him confident of doing just that. The Frenchman defeated fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round and then lost just three games against J.J Wolf last time out. The win over Wolf, his 41st of the season, moved him up five places to 29th in the live ranking.

Andrey Rublev has the head-to-head advantage in this series and will be out to maintain this on Friday. Rublev, who won his first Masters 1000 title back in April in Monte-Carlo, is through to this round for the first time here. He has been in excellent form in Shanghai and has won his three rounds without dropping a set. Rublev defeated 12th seed Tommy Paul by the loss of 10 games in the last round. It was his 48th win of the season in 68 outings and the 21st on hard courts. Rublev has won two titles this year and has finished as runner-up three more times. He is up one place to sixth in the live ranking.
