Ugo Humbert progressed to this round after defeating compatriot Arthur Fils in three sets. Fils, who won the opening set, was forced to retire at the start of the fourth.

Humbert has now won four of his five matches this season. The world number 14 defeated Zverev in their first career encounter four years ago in Halle.

Alex Zverev has won the last two matchups with Humbert. His most recent victory came last November in the final of the Paris Masters.

With his strong start to the season, he will be confident of adding to his advantage and advancing to the last eight. Zverev is unbeaten this season through his five matches.

The world number two has won his three matches this week without dropping a set.

To advance to the second week for a sixth time in his last seven Melbourne appearances, the German outdueled unseeded Jacob Fearnley.
