Second seeded Alex de Minaur takes on the seventh seed Ugo Humbert in the last eight of the Atlanta Open. The winner of this match will face either fifth seed Christopher Eubanks or unseeded Aleksandar Vukic for a place in the final. De Minaur began this outdoor hard court tournament ranked 17th which is two places below his career high achieved in 2021. The Australian reached the final of the grass court Queen's Club event in June, losing to Carlos Alcaraz. Before that he had a fair amount of success in hard court tournaments. That included winning the title in Acapulco with two other quarter finals reached on the surface. in Atlanta this week, the second seed has had just the one match. That saw him beat fellow Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis in straight sets for the loss of only seven games. He's 3-1 up in previous meetings against Humbert and has won the last three played. They are 1-1 on hard courts with de Minaur winning the only one played outdoors. His only loss to Humbert was three years ago.

Ugo Humbert is still 38th in the live rankings and hoping to squeeze into the seedings for the upcoming US Open tournament. The Frenchman is back on hard courts after getting to the last four in the grass court Hall of Fame Open earlier this month. This year has seen him reach the final of a hard court Challenger Tour in Pau but this is his first time in 2023 past the last 32 of an ATP hard court event. In Atlanta, Humbert had his problems in the first round. In an all-French clash he went a set down to Constant Lestienne before battling back to win the next two sets, both by a 7-5 scoreline. Round two wasn't that easy either with a 7-6 6-4 victory over quaifier Lloyd Harris. We go for de Minaur to get the win here.
