Tsvetana Pironkova vs Serena Williams Prediction & Betting Tips - WTA US Open

by Steve Ashfield | in Tennis Predictions

Just three wins separate Serena Williams from equalling the record of Margaret Court. The American has been chasing that elusive Grand Slam victory for over three years and faces the resurgent Tvetsana Pironkova in the US Open quarter final. Not since the 2017 Australian Open has Williams won a Grand Slam title. The American has played in four finals since then but still can't get that 23rd singles win. The past two years have seen Williams lose in the US Open final and it's six years since she last won this title. A win this week will see her winning this title in four different decades but can she do it?  So far in this tournament, Serena has beaten two seeded players, namely Sloane Stephens (26th) and Maria Sakkari (15th) but both went to the final set.

Tvetsana Pironkova is having an incredible run in this tournament and shares something in common with her opponent. Not all the big wins but the fact she is a mother making her return to the WTA cIrcuit. Firstly, injury ruled out her out the 2017 US Open, then she gave birth the following year. This is her first tournament since the 2017 Wimbledon Championships and needed a protected ranking to get her into the draw. Pironkova has never been ranked in the top 30, her highest position being 31 and that was ten years ago. This is only her fourth Grand Slam quarter final and her best run was a semi-final appearance at Wimbledon in 2010. It's only the second time she has made it past the second round in this tournament, so you wouldn't have been putting her name down as a potential quarter finalist. Pironkova has beaten Garbine Muguruza, Donna Vekic and Alize Cornet (ranked 56th in the world) and only dropped one set. That was a second set tie-break in her fourth round tie with Cornet. All good runs have to come to an end and the suggested wager is to go for Williams to win this in straight sets.

Our Tsvetana Pironkova vs Serena Williams Prediction

It's been an incredible comeback by Tsvetana Pironkova who has been off the circuit for three years. When she did last step on a court, she was only ranked 131st in the world. Now she faces one of the stiffest tasks in the women's games as she takes on Serena Williams in New York. There won't be a crowd of course and that is helping Serena who doesn't always get the best of treatment from them. She has put up a solid performance in this tournament so far, getting revenge for a recent defeat by Maria Sakkari in her last match. Go for Williams to get a straight sets win here.
