British player Naikhta Bains faces a tough second qualifying match as she bids to make it to the main draw at Wimbledon. Bains is the world number 246 and takes on Tsvetana Pironkova, who reached the Wimbledon semi-final in 2010. Bains was only 12 when Pironkova (now 33) lost in the last four to Vera Zvonareva. Her highest ranking is 134th, achieved three years ago. Of 15 matches played this year, only five have been won. Her best performance was getting to the last eight of a clay court tournament in Villa Maria, losing to fellow Brit Francesca Jones. Not since 2019 has she beaten a player ranked in the top 200. Bains beat Reka Luca Jani in the first qualifying round who is ranked 181st. This is far tougher for the British player.

Pironkova is the eighth seed in qualifying and beat Usue Maitane Arconda in the first round for the loss of just one game. Her current ranking is 103rd with a live ranking one place higher than that. Her form this year is much better than her opponents with 12 out of 19 won before this tournament and at a higher level. Pironkova has won $5.1m in her career, Bains is just below the $250,000 mark. Her highest ever ranking was 31st 11 years ago and this year has seen her get wins over recent winner Liudmila Samsonova and Donna Vekic. She also won a set against Aryna Sabalenka 6-0 before losing. Earlier this month, Pironkova made it to the last four in Nottingham. Back her to win this match in straight sets.
