Sweden’s Truls Moregard will take on Fan Zhendong of China in the Men's Singles Final of the table tennis competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Sunday afternoon. The Swede is ranked 26th in the world standings while the Chinese athlete is ranked fourth. Here’s our match prediction for this gold medal encounter.
While China have largely dominated the table tennis scene for many years, the 2024 Paris Olympics has seen the rise of a somewhat unexpected star in Sweden’s Truls Moregard, who will have the chance to claim gold on Sunday.
Competing in his first-ever Olympics, Moregard booked his spot in the grand final by overcoming Brazilian Hugo Calderano 4-2 in the semis. He is now the first Swede to reach the final since Jan-Ove Waldner in 2000.
Moregard beat Nuytinck, Wang, Kao and Assar in the earlier rounds of the competition, which is an incredible feat considering he carried a five-match losing streak into the competition.
However, standing in the way of Moregard is none other than the formidable Fan Zhendong, who will be gunning to upgrade his silver in Tokyo to gold this year in Paris.
The Chinese star earned his chance to compete for the biggest prize in table tennis by beating Japan’s Tomokazu Harimoto in a seven-set thriller in the quarter-final before making light work of hometown favourite Felix Lebrun in the semis.
Fan secured the WTT Championship last month and with his run in Paris, he is now on a 10-match winning streak. Additionally, he has never lost to Moregard in three previous encounters.
