The 33-16-8 Toronto Maple Leafs are stop number two on a five-game road trip for the 32-19-7 Vegas Golden Knights early on Wednesday morning. The Leafs won in Vegas less than a week ago, running riot in the opening frame to take a 4-0 lead at the end of the first period. Auston Matthews got his league-leading 52nd goal that day to cap a 7-3 win but it was secondary scoring most of the way for the Leafs who have been putting up some serious numbers in recent games. They are the winners of seven straight, knocking the Anaheim Ducks for nine goals and the Arizona Coyotes for six on the recent road trip that included Vegas. Three Leafs are north of 70 points this season, heading towards 100. The Edmonton Oilers had three players in triple figures last year but they were the first team to do it since the 1995-96 Pittsburgh Penguins.
Vegas limp in having lost five out of six, their only win coming 4-0 in San Jose against the Sharks who have the second-fewest points in the league. They have shipped 24 goals in those five losses which has to be a concern given how powerful the Leafs are up front. Goalie Adin Hill has lost his lead in the standings in both goals against and save percentage, sub .900 in his last four appearances. Just 13-10-5 on the road this season, they fell in a shootout to the Ottawa Senators in the first game of this road trip after taking a 2-0 lead. The Knights have still been finding the back of the net, scoring three or more in 13 of their last 15 but the blue line and netminding have deserted them.
