Both of these teams are in the second half of a back-to-back situation before they play in the early hours of Monday morning. The Detroit Red Wings were 20-16-5 before their home game with the Los Angeles Kings while the Toronto Maple Leafs were 21-10-8 ahead of their home game with the Colorado Avalanche. When the Leafs beat the Red Wings earlier in the season, it was a game for the second day in a row for the Wings while the Leafs were coming in cold after six days off. That told the story completely, the Leafs were slow to start, entering the final period down 2-0 but the Red Wings' legs gave out in the 3rd period allowing the Leafs to score the three goals they required to win the game. Only four teams have been beaten more in an overtime period this season than the Leafs, but they are 4-1 when the match has been decided by a shootout.
The Red Wings are enjoying their best season in a number of years, doing particularly well in front of net. They were a perfect 3/3 on their Californian road trip and then lost at home to the surging Edmonton Oilers. One thing that they have done well is to bring in players who are working well in their system. Alex DeBrincat leads the team in points in his first campaign in Detroit while Shayne Gostisbehere has 28 points in his first 40 games as a Red Wing on the blue line. That puts him in line for the second-best season of his career in terms of points and 14th in the league for a defenceman. Add to that Patrick Kane who will be a first-ballot hall of famer when his time comes, with 14 points in 17 games, and there is a lot to be excited about in Detroit. They have 10 wins on the road this season, including their last three, although that came after losing five of six.
