Tommy Paul is the 11th seed for this hard court Shanghai Masters tournament. The American faces 30th seeded Tomas Machac for a place in the quarter-finals. Read our match prediction below.

For the winner of this match, there's a quarter-final against either third seed Carlos Alcaraz or Gael Monfils. Paul is the world number 13 and a win here will see him equal his career-high position of 12th.

The 27-year-old is 11th in the ATP Live Race so he still has a chance of making it into the Tour Finals. His last tournament was in Tokyo and he lost in the last 16 to his opponent in this match. That was lost in three sets after winning the opening one. This tournament has seen him get wins over Fabio Fognini and 19th seed Alejandro Tabilo. 

It was a tough match against Tabilo with the first two sets being shared and both going to a tie-break. Paul won the final set for the loss of only two games.

Tomas Machac is up to a career high 32nd in the live rankings. He celebrates his 24th birthday on Sunday, will he have more to be pleased about than just a slice of cake? After beating Paul in Tokyo he went on to reach the last four, losing to Ugo Humbert.

The Czech would have been delighted with that run as he'd had to retire from his previous two matches. He doesn't seem to be having any problems in Shanghai but had a tough opening match against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
