The first round of the US Open main draw sees American Tommy Paul taking on Italian Stefano Travaglia. The winner of this match will go on to face either Roman Safiullin or Marco Cecchinato in the second round. Tommy Paul takes to the court following his third-round exit to Carlos Alcaraz in the Cincinnati Open. He’s already bettered his 2022 US Open performance where he was eliminated in the second qualifying round. The Italian is having a fairly solid 2023 with a record of 38 wins and 27 defeats overall. The 234th-ranked player made it to two finals this year, the Tenerife 3 Challenger and the M25 Palmanova events, but would ultimately come up short in both. This is Travaglia’s first tournament on a hard court surface since February. The majority of the 31-year-olds career wins have come on clay, cementing the Italian as a clay specialist. Of his 825 matches, only 107 have come on hard courts. He possesses a career winning percentage of 62% but sees that mark drop to only 53% on this surface.
