14th seeded Tommy Paul hopes to bring his good recent form into the US Open. He takes on unseeded Roman Safiullin in the second round of the final Grand Slam of the year. Up next for the winner is a third round match against either the 21st seed Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina or unseeded Juan Martin Cerundolo. Paul comes into this tournament after reaching at least the quarter finals of his last four tournaments, three on hard courts. His best performance in recent hard courts was making it to the last four in Toronto. That included beating Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter finals. At the start of this year, the American made it to the last four of the Australian Open, the only other Grand Slam played on an outdoor hard court. His one hard court final of the year was in Acapulco where he lost to Alex de Minaur. The first round of this tournament saw him defeat qualifier Stefano Tavaglia in four sets, dropping the third. Winning this match will see him equal his best performance of reaching the third round in New York.

Roman Safiullin began this tournament ranked 60th which is 17 places below the career high he achieved last month. The Russian is up to 55th in the live rankings after his first round win over Marco Cecchinato. He only dropped six games in that straight sets win, including winning the final set to love. Safiullin is playing the US open for only the second time in his career. His only other appearance was last year when he lost in the first qualifying round. He'd never got past the second round of a Grand Slam before reaching the last eight at Wimbledon this year. He won his only previous match against Paul. That was played this year but was on clay.
