Fifth seed Tommy Paul and the unseeded Matteo Arnaldi will have their first career duel at the Japan Open. The two will face off on Thursday in a first round tie. Below are stats and our prediction of this match.

Paul has ended a three-week break since his last match and should be refreshed to make a winning start here. The American was last on the court on home soil at the US Open where he earned a fourth-round finish.

Paul is having a strong year, winning 38 matches thus far. This has culminated in two tour titles – the Dallas Open and the Queen’s Club Championship. The latter was his first tour title on grass.

The world number 13 also claimed Bronze at the Paris Olympics and was runner-up at the Delray Beach Open.

Arnaldi is also coming off a self-imposed break. The Italian took a two-week break since his last match. He has been in superb form in his recent outings and arrives for this match having won seven of his last 10 matches.

Four of these wins were achieved on hard court in Montreal where he reached the semi-finals. That was his best performance at an ATP 1000 tournament and is also his best result of the year.

The four-time challenger champion also managed a run to the fourth round at Roland Garros and third round at Flushing Meadows. He has compiled a 28-22 record and at some point, had broken into the ATP top 30. Now he is placed 34th in the live ranking.

The winner here will take on Alexei Popyrin or Tomas Machac for a place in the quarter-finals.
