The second round at the Japan Open will have an all-American showdown when fifth seed Tommy Paul battles unseeded Mackenzie McDonald. Tommy Paul looked a bit shaky in his first-round win over Daniel Altmaier. He lost the first set, but as he has been in good form recently, he was able to secure the win in three sets. Paul has won three of his last four matches and has bounced back after losing five on the trot. The 26-year-old has compiled a 43-26 record and has registered 28 of his victories on hard courts. This should have him confident of a third win against McDonald as the previous two encounters have all been on hard courts. Paul is ranked 12th in the ATP which is a career high.

Mackenzie McDonald overcame the challenge of Max Purcell and won in straight sets. Despite earning his 34th win of the season, McDonald has dropped down to 41st in the live ranking. The 28-year-old has had a rocky campaign and has won only six more matches than he has lost. He has been a bit settled though on hard courts where he has compiled a 23-14 record. A first win against his compatriot will also move him past this round for the first time in what is his third appearance. The winner here will proceed to play either Ben Shelton or Jordan Thompson in the quarterfinals.
