Tenth seed Tommy Paul returns to hard courts after his exploits on clay in the Olympics. The American takes on unseeded Luciano Darderi in the first round of the ATP Montreal tournament. Read on for our prediction for this match.

Paul is the world number 12 and will be showing off the bronze medal he won in the men's doubles at the Olympics. In the singles event he lost in the quarter-finals to Carlos Alcaraz. His Olympic campaign began with a first round win over Luciano Darderi.

Now he faces the Italian again, but this time on a hard court. The winner of this match will face either Denis Shapovalov or a qualifier in round two of this Masters tournament. Paul has lost in three quarter-finals in his last four events and won the other one.

On hard courts this year, Paul won the Dallas tournament and was runner-up in Delray Beach. He also made it to the last four at this year's Indian Wells event. beating both Ugo Humbert and Casper Ruud. He's tenth in the Live ATP Race.

Luciano Darderi is 32nd in the new ranking list so has a battle on his hands to be seeded at the upcoming US Open. The Italian has lost his last three matches but all were played on clay. On hard courts, Darderi has barely played this year.

This is only his third tournament of 2024 on this surface and he's yet to win a match. We back Paul to win this in straight sets.
