Top seed Tommy Paul will on Friday square off with unseeded John Isner in the quarterfinals at the 2023 Hall of Fame Open. The winner here will battle either fourth-seed Mackenzie McDonald or unseeded Alex Micheslen for a chance at the final. Paul is making his debut in Newport where he began by defeating wildcard Ethan Quinn in straight sets. He will hope for the same outcome as he locks horns with his countryman. Paul has been in fine form in 2023, winning 30 of the 46 matches he has played. His success this season has enabled him play three finals though he is yet to win a title. His latest run to a final was in Eastbourne on grass, a surface where nine of his victories have come. Paul is currently ranked 14th in the ATP which is the highest he has been placed in his career.

Isner is marking his 11th appearance in Newport and will target winning his fifth title here. No one has more than the four titles the American has won at the Hall of Fame Open. It is however four years since his last triumph. As this could be his last appearance here, he will want to crown it with a win. Isner announced at the start of the year that 2023 could be his last season before he retires. The 38-year-old hasn’t played much this season; he has only been on the court 15 times thus far. He has struggled, losing nine times. But having won his opening two rounds here, he will be confident heading into this match. He defeated Corentin Moutet in straight sets in the last round for his second win in three matches on grass. The former world number eight is now up 13 places to 113th in the live ranking.
