Tommy Paul is the 14th seed and takes on unseeded Gregoire Barrere in the Australian Open first round. Whoever wins this match will be up against either Marcos Giron or Jack Draper in round two. If it's Draper, then Paul will be out for revenge (if he beats Barrere of course) as the British player beat him in Adelaide last week. Paul is ranked 14th in the world but down one place in the live list. The Adelaide International is the only tournament he's played this year, winning one match before losing to Draper in the quarter finals. The Australian Open is the only Grand Slam in which he's made it past the fourth round. Last year went well for him with a run to the semi-finals.

Gregoire Barrere is down at 83rd in the rankings but was as high as 49th last July. The French player is in his third tournament of the new year. He lost in the second qualifying in Brisbane and then played in the ASB Classic. That didn't last long for him though as he was beaten in the first qualifyin round by Alex Michelsen winning only four games. Barrere does not have an impressiv record in Grand Slams and has never made it past round two of one. In the Australian Open, he made it to the second round four years ago but was beaten in round one last year. He's 2-2 in previous meetings but both of his wins came eight years ago. Paul won both their matches last year but this is their first meeting on a hard court. Paul can win this in straight sets.
