Third seed Tommy Paul and the unseeded Gregoire Barrere will meet on Tuesday in the second round of the Lyon Open. Paul started the week still ranked 17th in the ATP. He has a record of 19 wins and 10 losses and in his second appearance in Lyon, has a losing record on clay. The American has lost four of the seven matches he has played on clay. His three wins on the surface came in his surge to the title match at the Aix en Provence. He lost that match and his opener in Rome, and will hope to avoid losing three in a row. Paul has never beaten Barrere and has lost both encounters against the Frenchman which have all been on clay. However, this was back in 2016 in the early stages of his pro career.

It has been seven years since these two players met; Gregoire Barrere will hope to continue his streak against Paul. All three of their encounters have been in France and Barrere will once again have the backing of the home crowd. Barrere has started his fifth appearance in Lyon on a winning note. He defeated countryman Corentin Moutet 2-0 in his opening match to advance to this round for the first time. Despite earning four ranking points with the win, Barrere is down three places to 58th in the live ranking. The 29-year-old has managed 21 wins from 35 matches and has five wins on clay.
