The ATP National Bank Open at Toronto enters the round of 32 with 12th-seed Tommy Paul taking on unseeded Francisco Cerundolo. The American Paul disposed of Cerundolo’s countryman Diego Schwartzmann in the previous round 2-1. Francisco Cerundolo, meanwhile, overcame Canadian Alexis Galarneau also by a score of 2-1 to earn his spot in this round. Tommy Paul is currently 14th in the ATP rankings, the highest ever position he has achieved in his career. The 26-year-old is having a strong 2023 and has made it to three finals already, although he has painfully finished as the runner-up in all three. Paul kicked off the year with an impressive run in the Australian Open, making it all the way to the semi-final before being knocked out by eventual winner Novak Djokovic. He would follow that up with final appearances in Acapulco, Aix En and Eastbourne. Paul will be desperate to get the win here as he has lost both of his meetings with Cerundolo this year, one of which was the previously mentioned final at Eastbourne.

Cerundolo comes into this meeting also having a solid 2023. He was crowned champion of Eastbourne back in the beginning of July and finished as the runner-up in the Lyon Open. The 22nd-ranked ATP player also made the quarter-finals of the Miami Open, Rome Open and the fourth-round of Roland Garros. Before his win over Galarneau, Cerundolo lost two in a row which included a first round exit at Hamburg to Yannick Hanfmann. The Argentine has gotten the upper-hand over his opponent today this year but both of those matches took place on grass. This will be the   first hard court matchup between the two, which gives Paul the advantage. Cerundolo does not often play on this surface with 44 of his 401 career matches coming on hard courts. The 25-year-old is 7-5 on hard courts this year and has a 32-19 record overall in 2023.
