Tomas Martin Etcheverry vs Stan Wawrinka Prediction & Betting Tips - ATP US Open
by Joseph King | in Tennis Predictions
The second round of the 2023 US Open sees 30th-seeded Tomas Martin Etcheverry taking on unseeded Stan Wawrinka. The winner of this matchup will meet up with either Lorenzo Sonego or sixth-seed Jannik Sinner in the third round. Etcheverry came back down two sets to one in the first round to beat Otto Virtanen 3-2. It was a much-needed win for the Argentine, who had lost his last three consecutive matches heading into this tournament. Etcheverry suffered first-round defeats in both the Cincinnati Open and the National Bank Open, both hard court events. Prior to that, the 24-year-old made the semi-final of the Kitzbuhel Open and a strong run to the quarter-final of the French Open. Etcheverry has made it to three finals in this calendar year: Santiago, Houston and Bordeaux, all clay events, but would finish as the runner-up in all three. Etcheverry is certainly a clay specialist as the majority of his games, and wins, come by way of that surface.
Even at 38-years-of age, Stan Wawrinka is still putting up solid results on the tennis court. The Swiss was able to overcome Yoshihito Nishoika in straight sets in the first round to make it to this stage. Wawrinka made the final of the Croatia Open at the end of July, his best finish of the calendar year up to this point. Prior to this tournament, the former world number three was eliminated from the Cincinnati Open in the third round by Max Purcell following an impressive second round win over current world number 10 Frances Tiafoe. Wawrinka has a record of 25 wins and 16 defeats (60%) in 2023 which includes a 7-4 mark on hard courts. On this surface throughout his career, the current 49th-ranked ATP pro has a winning mark of 65%.

Our Tomas Martin Etcheverry vs Stan Wawrinka Prediction
While Etcheverry may be the higher-ranked player at the moment, it’s the more experienced Wawrinka that has an advantage here. The Swiss is in fine form and has put up strong results throughout his career on this type of surface. Etcheverry, meanwhile, sees a noticeable dropoff in his career performances on hard courts compared to clay. Wawrinka should also have the mental advantage over his opponent as these two faced off at Wimbledon just over two months prior. Our Tomas Martin Etcheverry vs Stan Wawrinka prediction is for Wawrinka to win with a -1.5 set handicap
