Eighth seed Sebastian Korda and the unseeded Tomas Martin Etcheverry meet for the third time in 2023 with Monday’s showdown in Basel. The two will square off in the first round with the winner taking on either Yannick Hanfmann or Andy Murray next. Tomas Martin Etcheverry has found it rough in recent weeks and arrives here having managed only one win in his last five matches. The Argentine, who has yet to play a match on an indoor hard court, has lost his last three fixtures. He was defeated in Tokyo in his last match by Shintaro Mochizuki, a player ranked almost 200 places below him in the ATP. Etcheverry has played only two matches on indoor hard courts in his career and has one win and one loss. He is currently ranked 32nd in the ATP.

Sebastian Korda has won both meetings with Etcheverry which all happen to have been played this season. The latest encounter came last month in Zhuhai and he again won in straight sets. With the form he is in at the moment, he will be confident of a third victory against his Argentine opponent. Korda has won eight of his last 10 fixtures and has made at least the semifinals in his last three tournaments. The American starts the week in a new career-high ranking of world number 22. He has won four of his five matches on indoor hard courts.
