Sixth seed Tomas Etcheverry and unseeded Laslo Djere will begin their Hamburg European Open campaign with a Monday meeting. The winner of this first-round tie will play either world number 229 Guido Pella or lucky loser Thiago Monteiro next. Tomas Etcheverry starts the week ranked 34th in the ATP. He has won 27 of the 45 matches he has played with 22 of his victories coming on clay. The Argentine has however lost in his last two outings with the latest defeat coming in the first round in Bastad. His form on clay this season has guided him to play three finals so far. Two of those finals were his first and second at tour level.

Laslo Djere has also had his best moments this season on clay. Twelve of the Serb’s 21 victories have come on the surface and so too have 10 of his 18 defeats. He arrives to make his fourth appearance in Hamburg after losing in the first round in Gstaad. Djere is a former semifinalist here, achieving this feat in 2021. Last year though, he was eliminated in the first round. Djere is a two-time tour winner on clay and has this season played one final, in the challenger circuit, on the surface. He starts the week in 57th place in the live ranking after dropping down two places.
