A place in the China Open quarterfinals is at stake when seventh-seed Casper Ruud and unseeded Tomas Martin Etcheverry play on Sunday. Tomas Martin Etcheverry had to come from a set down to oust the qualifier Lloyd Harris in the first round. The match lasted for close to three hours with the first two sets requiring tiebreakers. His fourth win in the last five matches allowed him to tie his hard-court record at eight wins and eight losses. Etcheverry has compiled a 34-24 record in 2023 and has now moved into the ATP top 30 for the first time. He is currently ranked 29th in the live ranking.

Casper Ruud also saw a tiebreaker required in his first-round win over Jan-Lennard Struff. The world number nine was a bit more decisive in the round than Etcheverry and won in straight sets. It was his second back-to-back victory which is the first time he has done so since July. The three-time Grand Slam finalist has been unimpressive at times, especially on hard courts where he has lost nine of 17 matches. All his highlights have been on clay, a surface where he has won one title and finished as runner-up twice. Ruud has compiled a 32-18 record thus far and is making his debut in Beijing. The winner of this second-round tie will play either top seed Carlos Alcaraz or unseeded Lorenzo Musetti next.
