Tomas Machac makes his debut in the Madrid Masters with a first round match against Emil Ruusuvouri. Up next in this outdoor clay court tournament is the 14th-seeded Ben Shelton. Machac is 46th in the live rankings and some good runs in the next few weeks could yet see him seeded at Roland Garros. Not that he has a good record there having never won a match in three visits. This is his first time in the Madrid Masters and he's had limited appearances on clay this year. Last week saw him get to round two in Barcelona but he then pulled out of his scheduled match against Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina. He did win a Challenger Tour clay court event last year.

Emil Ruusuvouri is 68th in the live list and 50th in the ATP Race. His year began well with a run to the final of the hard court tournament played in Hong Kong. He took Daniil Medvedev to five sets in the Australian Open and reached two quarter-finals but again those were played on a hard court. This is his first clay court tournament of the year  He's playing in this tournament for the third time but is yet to get past the second round. It's the same at Roland Garros where he's won two matches in three years. This is a tough match to predict but Machac just gets our vote.
