A pivotal game four of the PBA Philippine Cup finals is set to tip off on Sunday with the defending champions TNT in desperate need of a win against the San Miguel Beermen. The Beermen have now won two straight to take a 2-1 series lead after dropping game one in dramatic fashion to a Jayson Castro buzzer beater. San Miguel showed their quality and championship pedigree with a strong response as the 27-time champions seek their first Philippine Cup since 2019. Superstar duo June Mar Fajardo and Jaymar Cruz combined for 45 points in the game three win which saw the Beermen win yet another game when they crack the 100 point mark, finishing the game with a score of 108-100.

The Beermen got a huge boost from legendary big-man June Mar Fajardo who absolutely dominated game three, finishing the last game with 27 points and 27 rebounds. TNT will have to do a better job of containing the six-time MVP if they want to avoid falling down to a potentially untenable 3-1 deficit. Key for the defending champions will be their defensive effectiveness as they will likely have to hold San Miguel to sub 100 points to get the win. TNT boasts the third best defensive mark in the PBA with only 88.3 average points allowed per game.

It’s now been back-to-back games where TNT star man Mike Williams has struggled to make his mark on the game. Game one saw Williams finish with only 7 points while game two saw him score 17 but shoot an inefficient 6 for 15 from the field. The 30-year-old is the team’s leading scorer this season at 19.7 points per game and will need to get back to around that average for his team to get back in this series. A positive for TNT has been the elevated play of second leading scorer Roger Pogoy. The Cebu-born Pogy scored 25 points in game three and is averaging 26.3 points per game for the series.

We were a bit fortunate to cover the San Miguel -3.5 spread that we gave out in game three as the game was an extremely close affair which saw 15 lead changes and would eventually go to overtime. The return of Chot Reyes, the five-time PBA coach of the year, is a significant boost for the defending champions as his presence in game one allowed TNT to hold the Beermen to just 84 points in a win. The champions’ backs are firmly against the wall here in what is essentially a must win game. Expect a response in what should be another closely contested game.
