Eighth seed Zhizhen Zhang faces unseeded Thiago Seyboth Wild for a place in round two of the Hamburg Open. Next up in this clay court tournament is either Flavio Cobolli or Daniel Altmaier, both of whom are unseeded.

Zhang is up to 34th place in the ATP Tour live rankings which is one place below his career high. He returns to action after losing to Jan-Lennard Struff in the second round at Wimbledon. The Chinese player has had some success on clay this year so won't mind returning to this surface.

He reached the quarter-finals in Rome with a win over Ben Shelton before being beaten by Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets. Zhang is yet to reach an ATP Tour clay court final but has won two Challenger Tour events and reached four other finals.

Thiago Seyboth Wild sits at 72nd in the live rankings and recently reached round two at Wimbledon, where he lost to Holger Rune. The Brazilian has won one ATP Tour clay court event but that was four years ago though he did win four Challenger Tour events in 2023.

His form on clay this year hasn't been that great in recent months with four of his last six matches lost. That included being beaten in the first round at Roland Garros this year. He did reach the last eight of the Rio clay court tournament but has been inconsistent in 2024. We tip Zhang to win this match.
