Thiago Monteiro is on a good run of form at present on his favored clay surface. The qualifier takes on unseeded Miomir Kecmanovic in round three of the italian Open. For the winner there's a match in the last 16 against either 12th seed Ben Shelton or unseeded Zhizhen Zhang. Monteiro is back in the top 100 after making it to the third round of this Masters tournament. The Brazilian is up to 91st after winning four matches in Rome this week. He won both of his qualifying matches without dropping a set. He's beaten Gael Monfils and 32nd seed Jordan Thompson in the main draw.. Monteiro got to the last 32 in Madrid last week and that included an excellent win over Stefanos Tsitsipas. Earlier in the year he got to the last eight of the Rio clay court tournament.

Miomir Kecmanovic caused an upset in the last round when beating the fifth seed Casper Ruud. He probably didn't expect to win that match after losing the first set without winning a game. He then won the next two to get revenge for his loss to Ruud in Madrid. Kecmanovic is up to 55th in the live rankings and 39th in the ATP Race. He's yet to reach a clay court quarter final this year, his best result being a last 16 appearance in Bucharest but only had to win one match to get that far. He leads Monteiro 1-0 in previous meetings having beaten him on clay in Buenos Aires three years ago. That match went to three sets but we tip Monteiro to win this match.
