The ATP Miami Masters tournament is at its first round stage. World number 70 Jason Kubler is up against Thiago Monteiro, who's ranked 11 places below him. This will be the second meeting between the two but the first ever at a main draw and will be played on an outdoor hard court. The winner has a tough draw in round two against fifth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime. Thiago Monteiro is returning to play on hard courts after spending the majority of the season on clay. He has struggled on the surface however and lost his fifth match in eight outings, in the first round at Indian Wells. He prepares to serve off here ranked 81st in the live ranking and having been eliminated with the first match at three of his last five tournaments, will be keen to give his best and avoid tumbling further down the world ranking which will result in him having to play qualifying rounds at future tournaments. The Brazilian is making his fifth appearance in Miami and is yet to progress from the first round.

Jason Kubler has played his entire season thus far on hard courts where he has a winning record with nine wins from 14 matches. He has also been more active than Monteiro as he has played in both Singles and Doubles events at three of the six tournaments he has appeared in. He played in both the Mixed Doubles and Doubles events at the Australian Open and won the title in the latter together with compatriot Rinky Hijikata. Being ranked 70th is a career-high for the Australian and will seek a win here to propel him even further up the rankings. Kubler and Monteiro first met in the qualifying rounds at the Barranquilla Challenger in 2014 where he won 2-0.
