Unseeded Thiago Monteiro and Daniel Elahi Galan will face off as they start their Swedish Open campaign on Monday. The winner of this first-round tie will set up a second-round showdown with either fifth-seed Alexander Zverev or unseeded Alex Molcan. Monteiro comes to Bastad after falling short of defending his title in Salzburg. The Brazilian was eliminated in the quarterfinals by eventual finalist Lucas Neumayer. Losing to a player ranked outside the ATP 250 highlighted Monteiro’s struggles this season. He currently has lost more matches than he has won. The loss to Neumayer was his 20th of the season. On a positive note however, is that 11 of his 14 victories have come on clay. This should give him the belief that he can have a sustained stay in this competition. Monteiro is currently ranked 121st in the live ranking.

Daniel Elahi Galan has also struggled for form in 2023. He has however fared better than Monteiro and has a 19-19 record thus far. In his last match, the Colombian was eliminated in the fourth round at Wimbledon. This was his best-ever finish not only at SW19 but in Grand Slams. It allowed him to move into a career-high ranking of number 56. His struggles saw him unable to defend his Sarasota title in the challenger circuit back in April. This remains to be his only final appearance of the season. Galan favors clay courts more and it is no surprise that the majority of his victories, 14, have come on the surface. Though it has been five seasons since he and Monteiro faced each other, Galan will be confident of doubling his advantage over him.
