Eighth seed Tereza Martincova will seek to advance to the main draw of the Italian Open for the second successive season when she begins her qualifying campaign against the unseeded Jaime Fourlis on Monday. This is Martincova’s third appearance in Rome and the third she is serving off from the qualifiers. Last season she went all the way to the main draw for the first time and will hope to have mastered the trick now. The Czech has however not started the season as she would have liked and comes to this match with a not-so-impressive record. The current world number 95 has lost 11 and won 12 of her 23 matches. She has also struggled to exert herself on clay with four wins from seven and will need to be at her best to get the better of Fourlis.

Jaime Fourlis is not faring much better; she has struggled for consistency, just like Martincova. The world number 150 has won 12 of the 21 matches that she has played with five of those coming on clay and will hope this form leads her to succes in Rome, where she is making her debut. The Australian has played largely in the ITF Circuit where she has won one title, with her success in Burnie. She arrives in Rome after making it to the final of the Wiesbaden Tennis Open on clay earlier this month. Her successes so far have seen her climb up 29 places in the world rankings and she will be keen to keep this going. This will be the first time the two players meet, and the winner will progress to the final round of qualifying to take on either 21st seed Olga Danilovic or the unseeded Ana Konjuh.
