Roger Federer hasn't had the easiest of passages to the last eight but he's made it through. He now takes on the unseeded Tenys Sandgren with the winner facing either Novak Djokovic or Milos Raonic in the semi-finals. Federer came into this tournament without having played in any of the tournaments that have taken place in the lead up to this event. He wasn't sure just what kind of form he would show but has continued his excellent record in this event. Since 2003, he has only twice failed to make it to at least the last eight with six title victories. It hasn't been easy for him though dropping two sets against John Milllman in round three and one set against Marton Fucsovics in the fourth. 

Tenys Sandgren is the only remaining unseeded player in the men's draw. He came into this tournament with a world ranking of 100 but in the live rankings has climbed to 56. The American has also dropped three sets on his way to this quarter final. He hasn't exactly been making many friends in Italy after beating eighth seeded Matteo Berrettini in the second round (a five-setter in which he led 2-0) and then number 12 seed Fabio Fognini in a four-set match in the last 32.  This is his second Australian Open quarter final, having lost in the last eight to Chung Hyeon in 2018. Federer is the worthy favourite to win this match but his opponent is in good form and can take a set off his opponent.
