OK hands up, who thought Taylor Townsend would make the last sixteen of the US Open? The 23-year-old American has only once reached the third round of a Grand Slam and that was in Paris five years ago. This year has seen her win just one match in the main draw of a Grand Slam event. That was at Wimbledon when beating a qualifier. She did show some signs of being a danger to seeds when taking a set off fourth seeded Kiki Bertens. Townsend led that match and only lost the second set on a tie-break. Coming into this tournament she was ranked 116th in the world but is up to 82nd in the live rankings. The second round saw her knock out Wimbledon champion Simona Halep in three sets and followed that up with a straight sets win over Sorana Cirstea.

Bianca Andreescu is the 15th seed for this tournament. The first two rounds produced straight sets wins over a wild card and a lucky loser. It got tougher in the third round as she took on 19th seed Caroline Wozniacki and beat her in two sets 6-4, 6-4. Despite being seeded so high,this is the first time the Romanian has made it past the second round of a Grand Slam event. Earlier this year, Andreescu caused a series of shocks when winning the prestigious Indian Wells tournament with wins over Elina Svitolina and then Angelique Kerber in the final. Andreescu missed Wimbledon through injury but won another tournament in August. This time it was in Toronto with wins over Kiki Bertens, Karolina Pliskova and Serena Williams (who retired injured) to win the title. This is where Townsend's run comes to and end, go for Andreescu to get the win.
