Taylor Fritz lost in the second round at Roland Garros. That was disappointing enough but he left the court in a wheelchair. Surgery took place in early June to mend a torn meniscus but he's already back on court and takes on Steve Johnson in the second round at Wimbledon. Fritz is the world number 40 but seeded 31st for this Grand Slam. He has slipped down the rankings this year, after beginning 2021 in 29th position. Earlier this year, Fritz took Novak Djokovic to five sets at the Australian Open. He got to semi-finals in Doha and Cagliari but then his form dipped before losing in Paris. Fritz is a former winner of the Eastbourne grass court tournament but has never made it past the second round at Wimbledon. He beat Brandon Nakashima in his comeback from injury. He's played Steve Johnson three times before and trails 2-1. This is their first meeting on grass and there have been three tie-breaks in previous matches.

Steve Johnson is the world number 74 but until playing at Roland Garros was having a nightmare year. He slipped to 88th in May and before the French Open hadn't won a match all year. It looked like another loss was on the way as he went two sets down to Francis Tiafoe in the first round. He recovered to win in five sets and repeated the feat, coming from two sets down to beat Thiago Monteiro. His run ended with a straight sets loss to Pablo Carreno Busta but at least he'd gone some wins under his belt. The 31-year-old has won two grass court tournaments and defeated Dennis Novak in the first round here. His best performance is a fourth round in 2016, losing in straight sets to Roger Federer.
