Taylor Fritz continues to show improvement on clay and faces the 21st seeded Francisco Cerundolo on Wednesday. The winner of this match in the Madrid Masters takes on either defending champion Carlos Alcaraz or Andrey Rublev in the last four. Fritz is seeded 12th in this tournament and is 13th in the live rankings. He's also in that position in the Live ATP Race and a win over Cerundolo can see him rise to ninth. The American made it to the fourth round of this outdoor clay court tournament last year. He's gone one round further this year with this run to the quarter-finals. He's building on his recent runners-up spot in Munich. Wins in this tournament have come against Luciano Darderi, 18th seeded Sebastian Baez and the eighth seed Hubert Hurkacz and without losing a set.

Francisco Cerundolo is 21st in the live rankings and reaching the last four can see him go as high as 17th. The Argentinian is 27th in the ATP Live Race and will hope to retain his unbeaten record against Fritz. Their only meeting was at last year's Roland Garros Grand Slam with Cerundolo winning in four sets. Cerundolo is bidding to reach his second clay court semi-final of the year, the other being in Rio. This is his second quarter-final in a row after getting to that stage in Bucharest. He's had wins over Fabian Marozsan, 15th seed Tommy Paul (after losing the first set) and then defeated the fourth seed Alexander Zverev in straight sets. This could be a close match but Fritz looks to be in the better form at present.
