Unseeded Tatjana Maria and wildcard Leylah Fernandez will on Friday meet at the Tennis in the Land WTA 250 tournament quarters. Tatjana Maria is in fine form at the moment and will fancy her chances of advancing to the last four. The German arrived in Cleveland after winning the WTA 125K in Barranquilla and has now won six matches on the trot. She defeated unseeded Varvara Gracheva in three sets in the first round. In the previous round, she was granted a walkover by fifth seed Anhelina Kalinina. This has given her ample title to rest and prepare for Friday’s match. Maria has played four finals thus far across all three levels and has won three titles with two being on hard court. The 36-year-old has compiled a 39-23 record with 20 of those wins coming on hard court. She is currently ranked 49th in the WTA world ranking.

Leylah Fernandez is up seven places to 65th in the live ranking. She has also claimed the majority of her 26 victories on hard court and will be confident of adding to this here. The Canadian has compiled a 26-18 record and on hard court has won 17 of 27 matches. The one-time US Open finalist will hope for a sustained run here to build momentum for the upcoming final major of the year. Fernandez has been in sublime form in her debut in Cleveland and has won her two rounds without dropping a set. In the first round, she lost just two games against unseeded Linda Noskova. To advance to this round, the 20-year-old saw Clara Tauson retire after a 6-0 display in the first set. Friday’s showdown will be the first-ever encounter between Maria and Fernandez. The winner of this match will book a semifinal showdown with either Sara Sorribes Tormo, Sloane Stephens, or Mirra Andreeva.
