Fifth seed Elena Rybakina and the unseeded Tatjana Maria will on Tuesday square off in the second round at the China Open. Progressing from this tie will set up a third-round showdown with either Mirra Andreeva or Anastacia Pavlyuchenkova. Tatjana Maria had the perfect start to her return to the Beijing main draw after seven years. The German defeated Martina Trevisan 2-0 and is now in the second round here for the first time. Her 43rd win of the season also ended a run of two straight defeats. Currently ranked 54th in the live ranking, Maria has recorded the majority of her victories this season on hard courts. She has compiled a 24-15 record on the surface and has won two titles in the ITF and challenger circuits.

Elena Rybakina has also registered the majority of her 43 victories this year on hard courts. The world number five has won 27 of the 35 matches she has played on hard courts. This superb run on the surface has resulted in three tour finals and one title. Rybakina was in good form in her opening-round match against crowd favourite Qinwen Zheng and lost just three games in the 2-0 victory. The Kazakh is making her debut in Beijing. Despite her strong performances this year, Rybakina has struggled with her form in recent weeks. She has lost twice in her last four outings and this should have Maria fancy her chances of an upset.
