World number 47 Tatjana Maria and the qualifier Daria Saville will face off next at the San Diego Open. They will battle in the second round with the winner going on to play either Katerina Siniakova or Emma Navarro. Tatjana Maria defeated Saville the first time they met. This was last season in Barranquilla. She will hope for the same outcome here as she targets to win more than two matches in a row at an event. The German has struggled with a lack of consistency all through the season and currently has compiled a 6-6 record. Five of her wins have come on hard courts and so too have five of her losses. Now ranked 44th in the live ranking, the 36-year-old defeated Leylah Fernandez in the first round. She progressed rather fortuitously as Fernandez was forced to retire in the second set while ahead 1-0.

Daria Saville overcame the challenge of world number 58 Zhu Lin in straight sets in the first round. This was her eighth win of the season in 13 outings and all eight have come on hard courts. The victory propelled her up a massive 23 places in the live ranking to number 125. Saville is making her debut in this WTA 500 tournament and has been in exceptional form. She has yet to drop a set in the three matches she has played since the qualifying rounds. The 29-year-old produced a semifinal finish in Hobart earlier in the year which is still her best result thus far.
