World number 113 Taro Daniel will play wildcard Martin Landaluce on Monday in the opening round at the Croatia Open. The winner will set up a second-round showdown with fourth seed Roberto Carballes Baena. Taro Daniel arrives for this tournament after being eliminated in the first round in Gstaad. That loss marked his 20th loss of the season in 42 matches played. Daniel is a strong performer on clay but has struggled this season on the surface. He has compiled a 6-9 win-loss record on clay, suffering the most defeats on the surface than on any other. The Japanese number three is back in Umag for his third appearance. He last played here in 2019 and has never gone past the first round.

Martin Landaluce is making his debut in Umag. This is the 17-year-old’s third tournament at tour level in 2023 and has participated in all three as a wildcard. He arrives at the tournament after exiting the Amersfoort Challenger in the first round. The Spaniard has played most of his tennis in the ITF and Challenger circuits. He has had a difficult campaign so far losing more matches, 16, than he has won. Ten of his 12 victories however have come on clay making him a tough opponent for the more experienced Daniel. Landaluce is currently down 11 places in the ATP live ranking to 720th.
