Former champion Cameron Norrie faces unseeded Taro Daniel in the Indian Wells third round. Norrie is seeded tenth and the winner of this match faces either sixth seeded Andrey Rublev or unseeded Ugo Humbert in the last 16. Norrie began this tournament ranked 12th but a win over Daniel will take him above Rafael Nadal no less into 11th position. The British number one has had a good year so far. That's reflected by the fact he is fourth in the Live ATP Race based on ranking points earned in 2023. Norrie has made it to three finals this year and recently won a clay court event in Rio beating Carlos Alcaraz. Norrie won Indian Wells in 2021 and reached the quarter finals last year. He's played one match in this event and had a comfortable straight sets win over qualifier Tony Wu in the second round after receiving a first round bye.

Taro Daniel began the week ranked 103rd in the world. His second round win over 28th sees Matteo Berrettini Daniel has taken him back into the top 100 with a position of 95th in the live rankings. Daniel beat the Italian despite not winning a game in the second set. He was as low as 125th last month He began his climb back up the rankings by reaching the last eight in Acapulco. Daniel had a win over Casper Ruud before losing to eventual winner Alex de Minaur. Before that tournament he had only won two ATP Tour main draws this year. He's won both of his previous matches against Norrie, including one in this tournament. However, those matches were in 2017 and 2018 and Norrie has improved a great deal since then and was ranked 111th last time they met. Back Norrie to win this.
