Heather Watson has dropped out of the top 100 but has a good chance of making the Wimbledon second round. The British player takes on Tamara Korpatcsch who was ranked 110th when the draw was made. Watson first played Wimbledon in 2010 but has only reached the third round on three occasions, the last time in 2017. Watson will do well to get that far this year with Belinda Bencic her likely opponent if winning this match. The 30-year-old had slipped to 109th in the world when they made the first round draw. Two grass court tournaments this year have seen her get to the last 16 in Nottingham and then a loss in the first round of the main draw at Eastbourne. Watson had lost in the qualifiers but then got into the main draw as a lucky loser. She then lost to another player who had already been beaten in the qualifiers, Rebecca Marino. Watson has only reached the last 16 of a tournament twice this year.

Watson will know that she could have had a lot tougher first round draw than this. Tamara Korpatsch is playing in the main draw at Wimbledon for the first time in her career. Three previous attempts had been made to qualify but all failed. This time her ranking got her straight into the last 128 at Wimbledon. Three grass court tournaments have been played this year by the German. The best result was a last 32 and last week saw her lose to Katie Swan (ranked 223rd at the time) but get into the main draw as a lucky loser, only to lose to Sabine Lisicki (a good player but ranked outside the top 800 after injuries). Neither player is likely to go deep in this tournament but Watson can get the win but high stakes aren't recommended.
