Ninth seed Daniel Evans and 12th seed Tallon Griekspoor will on Monday contest the final of the 2023 Washington Open. This will be Evans’ first final of the year and Griekspoor’s third. Tallon Griekspoor has already won two tour titles this year, one coming on hard court. He is having his best-ever season in the tour as those two titles were his first at this level. The Dutchman defeated the in-form Taylor Fritz (top seed) in three sets in the semifinals. This should have him confident of emerging victorious here. The win, which moved him up to 26th in the live ranking, was his 26th in 38 matches in 2023. Thirteen of those victories have come in 17 outings on hard court. Griekspoor has lost both encounters with Evans and this will be another source of motivation.

Daniel Evans defeated Griekspoor twice last season on indoor hard courts. In his form at the Citi Open, he will be confident of another win in this fixture. The Briton struggled all season until he arrived in Washington where he is in his first tour final in two years. He is still on a losing record but this is the first time he has gone more than three matches without defeat. Evans has won three of his four matches here without dropping a set. In the semifinals, he overcame the challenge of fifth seed Grigor Dimitrov in one hour and 55 minutes. To highlight the form that he is on, Evans defeated second seed and crowd favourite Frances Tiafoe in straights in the quarterfinals. He is up eight places to 22nd in the live ranking which is a career-high.
