Sweden are the third favourites to win the 2023 Men's World Handball Championships. They are one of the co-hosts (the others being Poland) and take on Brazil in this Group C game in the Preliminary Round. The other two countries in this group are Cape Verde and Uruguay. Sweden have won this title on four previous occasions but not since 1999. In 2021, they lost in the final to Denmark and will be out to get some revenge for that defeat should the two countries meet in this 2023 renewal and beat them the Danes last October in the EFH Cup. Last year saw Sweden win the European Championships beating Spain by a single goal in the finals. Sweden lost a friendly to Serbia this month but that was only their second loss in 14 games, the other being a friendly defeat by Denmark.

Brazil are in the Men's World Handball Championships for the 15th successive tournament. They regularly make it into the Main Round and their best ever performance is a ninth place finish in 2019. Last year saw them win the South and Central American title. Form hasn't been good since winning that tournament with seven out of the last eight matches being lost. Their only win came against this month's Golden League in Norway. They finished third of the four teams that played in that tournament. This is a tough opening game for them and Sweden can get the win.
