Tomas Machac, the 26th seed at this year’s Australian Open, will begin his tournament against the unseeded Sumit Nagal. They will square off in the first round with the winner next playing Reilly Opelka or Gauthier Onclin. Below is our prediction for this match.

Sumit Nagal won his first-ever main draw tie at the Australian Open last season. He shocked 31st seed Alexander Bublik in straight sets as a qualifier in the first round.

Yet to win more than one match at a major, Nagal will hope he produces another career-high in his Melbourne return. The Indian number one, who has moved up to 91st in the live ranking, has compiled a 2-2 record to begin the season.

Tomas Machac has also won two of his first four fixtures of the 2025 campaign. He began the year at the United Cup where he was instrumental in the Czech Republic's run to the semi-finals.

The 24-year-old secured victories against Hubert Hurkacz and Flavio Cobolli with his setback being against Casper Ruud and Taylor Fritz. Machac had his best tour-level campaign last season and will aim to build on this.

He recorded 37 wins and played in his first tour final in Geneva. The world number 26 also had semi-final finishes in Tokyo and Shanghai and made it to at least the third round at three majors.
