Second seed Maria Sakkari will on Wednesday play unseeded Strom Hunter to begin her Guadalajara Open campaign. The two will battle in the second round with the winner next playing either Cristina Bucsa or Camila Giorgi. Strom Hunter defeated Iryna Shymanovich in straight sets in the first round. Her 24th win of the season ended a three-match losing run. Hunter has had a rocky campaign and has lost 14 times. The inconsistencies have been the same on hard court where half of her victories have come. The Australian has compiled a 12-9 record on hard court and has recorded one title in the ITF circuit on the surface. Hunter is making her Guadalajara debut and has moved up a massive 21 places in the live ranking to 136th.

Maria Sakkari lost in the final in her debut here last season. She will hope to go one better, especially with reigning champion Jessica Pegula not participating. To do so, the world number nine will have to fare better than she has in recent weeks. Sakkari has managed only two wins in her last seven outings. She lost in her last match which was in the quarterfinals in San Diego. The Greek number one has won 29 of the 48 matches she has played this year. Most of her victories, 17, have come on hard court though too have most of her defeats. Sakkari finished as runner-up in Washington last month to record her first and only tour final appearance of the year.
